ATV or UTV: Which is Right for You?
If it’s offroading on your mind, whether recreationally or through a means of work, you need to be sure you’re choosing the right vehicle for the job. As is the nature of offroading, the terrain can vary drastically, so operating a vehicle that maximises traction and stability whilst fulfilling your needs is essential.
Throughout this blog, we will weigh up your options, ATV or UTV, identify the pros and cons, as well as outline the scenarios where one is going to be more useful than the other. As a proud dealer of Polaris ATVs and UTVs, you can be sure we know a thing or two about choosing the right vehicle for the great outdoors.

Why You Should Buy an ATV
ATVs (all-terrain vehicles), also known as quadbikes, are great for those looking for a versatile way to traverse across outdoor terrain. They are small, agile and offer a great solution for travelling between fields and private work sites. They tend to be built for speed and handling, with the specifications geared towards being the go-to for nipping across fields, etc.
ATV Pros
Like we’ve mentioned, their sportier build means they are typically the quickest and most agile of the two options. Smaller and easier to handle means they are popular with people new to farm vehicles, allowing them to operate with ease but also store with relatively little effort. As the smaller of the two options, you should choose the ATV if you are likely to be navigating narrow trails and tight country roads.
From a recreational perspective, the ATV offers adrenaline-pumping excitement that most UTVs are not set up to produce. Should you like high speeds and agile cornering, the ATV is the ideal off-road solution.
ATV Cons
Of course, if you’re looking for a practical outdoor vehicle that is capable of moving a decent amount of cargo, the ATV is a limited option. With little room for cargo, the ATV is not designed to haul equipment in its own compartments or baskets. They are, however, powerful enough to tow a small trailer should it be required.
Why You Should Buy a UTV
UTVs (utility task vehicles), on the other hand, are far more practical than they are adrenaline-inducing. This is, of course, not an issue; there is a place for both these vehicles in the agriculture industry. Many within the industry will lean towards the UTV, providing value in a variety of scenarios, making them fantastic value for money. If you have designs on transporting more than just one person using an ATV or UTV, your decision is pretty much made for you; you’re choosing the UTV.
UTV Pros
Undeniably, the biggest benefit of choosing a UTV over an ATV is the practicality they offer. Typically made with 2 seats, sometimes even 4, UTVs are the ideal vehicle for transporting more than just yourself across off-road terrain. The other benefit that stands out to most when inquiring about these vehicles is their range of safety features compared to the ATV.
Most UTVs come with seats, seatbelts or harnesses, and in some cases a roll cage. Some models may even offer the choice of a windshield, adding that extra layer of protection. It is also worth noting that UTVs are faster than ATVs, meaning these safety features are appreciated a little extra.
UTV Cons
You would be hard-pressed to find a drawback from choosing a UTV that isn’t heavily outweighed by the long list of benefits. But in the interest of balance, we will share a couple of things to think about before you buy. UTVs tend to be less agile than an ATV, so if it is that excitement you’re after, then go with our first option.
They also tend to be more expensive, but when you consider the practicality and performance you get as a trade-off, you’ll soon forget the price tag. Of course, you could always go down the used UTV route for a cheaper deal.
