Everything You Need to Know About UTV Insurance

So you’re in the market for a UTV for your land or farm. It’s time to start thinking about the fine details of UTV ownership, considering things like running costs, where you’re going to store it when not in use and importantly, how you’re going to insure it. The likelihood is, you’ve insured plenty of vehicles before, such as cars, but you’re not 100% sure how to go about insuring a UTV.

There are a few factors that can influence the type of insurance you need, details you need to consider before purchasing, that can impact how much you pay. As premium UTV dealers here at Bruce Hopkins, we’ve put our heads together to help make the process as clear as possible, answering any potential questions you might have.

What is a UTV and Why You Need Insurance

A UTV is a Utility Vehicle, commonly used on farms and small holdings as a means of transportation. Thanks to their size, they can also be used to transport goods and material, along with multiple people, making them a handy bit of machinery to have at your disposal.

They can also be considerable investments, making insurance vital. Should the worst happen, you are covered and can either recoup what you paid or have a like-for-like model supplied.

What Does UTV Insurance Cover?

UTV insurance, like any other vehicle insurance, covers you for a range of events and incidents. Should your UTV be stolen, damaged or caught in something like a fire, you are covered by the insurance company for the value of your UTV. Where UTV insurance can vary from insuring something such as a work van, a number of variables can influence what type of insurance you get. We have broken down the main types below.

Comprehensive Cover

Comprehensive insurance covers everything. This is the most common policy type as it covers all eventualities. But, as you suspect, it costs the most.

Third Party/Liability Cover

This type of cover is essential if you plan to use your UTV on the roads. It covers you for accidents that involve another party.

Collision Cover

This type of coverage pays to repair, or if necessary, replace your own UTV if it is damaged in an accident with another vehicle or object, such as a tree or rock.

Do You Need UTV Insurance on a Farm?

It all comes down to where and when you use the UTV. If you’re going to use your UTV solely on private land, you do not require insurance to operate it. However, you need to consider the possibility of damage or worse, theft, occurring and whether you can afford to stump up the cash to fix the problem.

If you are going to use your UTV on public roads, even for small bursts, you are legally required to have at least third-party insurance. This covers you should you get into an accident with another party.

Regardless of whether you’re using your UTV privately or on public roads, we recommend you insure it to protect your assets.
